Many people are unaware that, when they travel on a package holiday abroad, they are protected by the Package Travel Regulations 1992.
These Regulations make tour operators responsible for your health and safety abroad at foreign hotels.
For example, if you suffer Salmonella Food Poisoning at a hotel in Mexico because the chicken was undercooked, or you are sick and catch Cryptosporidium due to the swimming pool being infected, your UK tour operator is liable.
The Regulations provide holidaymakers with legal rights to claim compensation for their ruined holidays and illness.
Montezuma II was the Emperor of Mexico and the Aztec Empire between 1502 and 1520 when the Spanish began their conquest.
The euphemism, Montezuma's Revenge, wasn't coined until the late 1950s, but is a reference to the high number of invaders who suffered illness, usually attributable to local water and food, and in many cases implicating the bacterial infection E Coli.
These days, illness is less common in Mexico, but, unfortunately every summer there are hotels that succumb to sickness outbreaks. Alarmingly many of these incidences can be linked to poor food hygiene practices and contamination, such as wild birds being allowed to freely spread bacteria in hotel restaurants.
The most common illnesses our Mexico Holiday Illness Claims Solicitors receive complaints about, from holidaymakers returning ill or sick from Mexico, are Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. Coli, Dysentery, Cryptosporidium or Shigella.
